Dogs and children is a topic that many people will have something to say about. It is very important that you, as the responsible adult ensures that your dog is well socialised and that your children know the doggy dos and don'ts.

Children need to be taught that their dog is not a toy and that it is an actual living breathing creature with a mind of its own, the best way to do this is by teaching your children the dog rules. You can even create a sign with your children that can be put up somewhere around the home to help remind them of the doggy dos and don'ts.

    - If a dog is sleeping do not disturb them or touch them

    - Never pick up the dog when Mum or Dad is not around. Always ask Mum and Dad for permission and their supervision.

    - Don't play rough with the dog, he doesn't like it.

    - Always ask permission before stroking a strange dog

    - Keep your face away from a dog and do not stare at them, he likes his own personal space.

    - Never run or charge at a dog as he does not like it and may become frightened.

    - Never touch a dogs paws or tail, these are places he doesn't like to be touched.

    - Never eat food around a dog. Always eat food at a table or on a sofa as dogs can try to eat it.

    - Always put away your toys after playing with them as the dog may try to play with them too.

    - Dogs need quiet time too. When a dog is having quiet time it needs to be left alone.

    - Never touch a dog while they are eating their own food.

    - Do not scream around dogs as they can become frightened.

    - Only play with the dog when Mum or Dad are around.

    - When stroking a dog be gentle from under the chin to the body, never pat hard or stroke backwards as this can upset him.

    - Never pat a dog over its head or from behind this may startle and frighten them.

As a responsible dog owner your dog will also need to be well socialised with children of all ages, even if they do not live with them as they may come across them when out on walks. As long as children know the doggy rules and your dog is well socialised they can be great company for each other.

You should also ensure that your dog and child are never left alone together. By using a stair gate you can create a space for your dog to have quiet time away from children.

    CONCLUSION

Most accidents that occur between dogs and children are by error from the parents or dog owners by not socialising their dogs and not teaching their children how to act around dogs. Taking care of a dog or puppy is very enriching for a child's life, it gives them the chance to learn about responsibility and create a bond with an animal. It is also a great way to keep your child healthy and active by taking them out for walks. Please remember that it is the adults responsibility to take care of a dog and should not be left to a child to do so.
